How to Make Caring for your Dog Easier After an Injury, Surgery or Disabling Diagnosis

When you experience an injury or surgery or receive a cancer or muscle-weakening diagnosis, caring for a dog might become an overwhelming task. Managing their day-to-day activities can be challenging, but there are several products available that can help make the process easier. Here are some products that can assist you in managing your dog during such times:

1. Gentle Lead Harness: I had major difficulties walking my dog and keeping my balance after my spinal surgery. I got used to walking my dog off-leash, but this did not go over well with the neighbors. Since then, I have tried numerous collars and found a winner. A gentle lead harness is designed to provide control and support while walking your dog. It helps distribute the pressure evenly, reducing strain on their neck and back. This type of harness is particularly useful for dogs who pull, bark viciously or are aggressive during walks.

2. No Spill Water Bowl: I am one to walk at night in the dark to let the dogs out and have stepped into a canine constructed slip-n-slide near their water bowl. This is not fun. A no spill water bowl is designed to prevent water from spilling or splashing, even if the bowl is tipped over. This is beneficial for people who may have limited mobility or weak coordination, ensuring that their dogs have access to water without creating a mess.

3. GPS Tracker: Leaving your dog with a pet sitter can be a source of worry. It also creates anxiety for your dog which can cause them to run. A GPS tracker can provide peace of mind by allowing you to monitor your dog's location in real-time. This is particularly useful if your dog has a tendency to wander or if they require immediate assistance in case of an emergency. There are a variety of GPS trackers available for dogs. The price range varies from $50 to $1000. You will need to do research on what fits your needs and budget. I don't have a one size fits all recommendation.

4. Enzymatic Cleaner: Accidents happen, especially when you are unwell or recovering from surgery and might be sleeping more or moving less limiting how many times your dog goes outside. An enzymatic cleaner is specifically formulated to break down and eliminate the odors and stains caused by pet accidents. It helps ensure a clean and hygienic environment for your dog, minimizing the risk of infection.

5. Magnetic Screen Door: If you aren't moving easily during your recovery or if moving is difficult, a magnetic screen door can be a valuable addition to your home in order to prevent the accidents we just discussed in number 4. It allows your dog to go in and out while keeping insects and pests out. I found that this specific screen door is pretty durable and closes nicely.

6. Large Embroidered Collar with Phone Number: You may consider purchasing a collar for your dog that has your phone number embroidered on it in a large font, especially if your dog is a runner. This way, if your dog gets loose, people can easily contact you without having to catch the dog first.

7. Dog Walking Services or Sitter: While you are recovering from surgery or if you are exhausted and may not be able to walk your dog, consider using a dog walking service or hiring a dog sitter to ensure that your dog gets the necessary exercise and attention. Additionally, providing your dog sitter with detailed information about your dog's condition, care instructions, and emergency contacts is crucial. The PDF below can serve as a comprehensive guide for your dog sitter, ensuring they have all the necessary information to provide the best care possible.

8. Thundershirt:  If your dog experiences anxiety, particularly separation anxiety, consider using the Thundershirt. These specially designed jackets apply gentle pressure to help calm dogs during stressful situations, such as when you are away during your recovery or if your dog's routine is upset.

9. Dog TV: Dog TV is a free television channel on YouTube specifically designed for dogs. It provides calming and engaging content that can help keep your dog entertained and relaxed during your recovery period or when you are away from home. If the dogs chasing sticks causes your dog to get too excited, consider Cat TV. It applies the same concept, but mainly uses birds and has nature sounds.

10. Calm Chew Tabs: There are various calming chew tabs available on the market that are formulated to help reduce anxiety in dogs. These chewable supplements often contain natural ingredients such as hemp, chamomile, melatonin, or L-tryptophan, which can have a calming effect on dogs.

Remember, while these products can be helpful, it's always important to consult with your veterinarian for specific recommendations tailored to your dog's needs. Their expertise and guidance will ensure that you are providing the most suitable care and support for your furry friend.
